A Glimpse at Cunard’s New Look Queen Mary 2

The Queen Mary 2 is one of the cruise industry’s most iconic ocean liners. Over the past few weeks the vessel has been undergoing a “remastering” in Germany, and now the line has revealed a host of exciting new features set to debut on-board its new look flagship vessel.

The ship’s stay at Hamburg’s Blohm + Voss shipyard has seen it revamped with a complete redesign, with the line’s marketing director Angus Struthers promising that “The scale of the works being undertaken during Queen Mary 2’s Remastering is quite something to behold.”

Renovations on a royal scale

So what’s new on the Queen Mary 2? One of the most notable transformations is the remodelled King’s Court Buffet, where the glass elevators have been removed to create a brighter, more expansive central serving station and public space. The line is also spotlighting the growing trend for solo cruising, with the addition of 15 new single state rooms. A new wine room will offer passengers access to a curated collection of vino and an in-house sommelier, while artist Sarah Medway has created a trio of artworks designed especially for the Queens Grill.

For those who love to shop, Queen Mary 2 is debuting three brand new boutique experiences. With Michael Kors, Aspinal of London and Barbour now at-sea, passengers can stock up on all their favourite luxury brands.

“I am in awe of the logistics and the precise scheduling involved in this, one of the largest and most complex refits in Cunard’s history. Whilst only 11 days into the refit, you can already see glimpses of how amazing our flagship will be when she returns to Southampton on June 23rd. My hats and praise go off to the thousands involved in making this happen,” said Struthers during a visit to the shipyard.

Meticulous attention to detail

As well as large scale changes, Cunard has also channelled its budget into the finer details. An exclusive collection of framed photography by Paul Ward will adorn Balcony cabins, Princess Grill and Queens Grill Suites, with the artist honing in on the Art Deco brilliance of its buildings in Liverpool, Southampton and New York. The Carinthia Lounge will delight port lovers with a new “vintage port wall” and menu, while the addition of 10 new kennels will allow pet lovers to travel with their beloved companions. Plus, an original 1916 lamppost that once stood outside the company’s original Liverpool HQ buildings will now stand tall in the pet recreation area.
