Royal Caribbean Goes Back to School to Find Latest Godmother

0

Finding a godmother has long been a rite of passage for any cruise ship entering into service, and the selected parties are traditionally household names and famous faces. From the Duchess of Cambridge who became the godmother of the Royal Princess in 2013 to Helen Mirren who was named the P&O Ventura godmother in 2008; some of the biggest names in modern culture have become the faces of leading cruise ships.

And now, the soon-to-be-launched largest cruise ship in the world is looking for her own godmother but is leaving the celebrity directory at home. Royal Caribbean are hoping to find Harmony of the Seas a godmother from South Florida, where the cruise line is based. More specifically, the cruise line is looking for a teacher, educator or mentor from the Sunshine State who is worthy of being named godmother to the Harmony of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean are currently receiving nominations for the honour, asking Floridians who have been inspired by their teachers or mentors to put them forward for the role. And it’s not just the honour of being named the godmother of the world’s largest cruise ship which is at stake, the winning nominee will also receive a $25,000 grant which will go to her school or non-profit organisation of her choice and will be invited on a two-night sailing on the Harmony of the Seas pre-inaugural sailing in November.

The contestant closes on 23 September 2016, and is open to full-time and part-time educators. The successful nominee will be honoured on 10 November during the official naming ceremony for the ship, held in Port Everglades, Florida.

This will not be the first time that Royal Caribbean have opted for a non-famous name to serve as godmother to one of their ships. Last year, Emma Wilby from Sunderland was named the godmother of the newly-launched Anthem of the Seas. Wilby was the winner of a UK-wide search for travel agents who deserved to be honoured, and she even sang at the christening of her godchild ship.

Upon her launch, Harmony of the Seas is set to complete seven-night itineraries around eastern and western Caribbean.
