0

Peter Jackson’s third instalment of ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ was without a doubt the most anticipated films of 2014. This year Royal Caribbean is bringing the epic fantasy saga to life and giving its passengers the chance to visit some of the spectacular set locations filmed on-site in stunning New Zealand. Serviced by Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas, the luxury vessels traverse the waters of New Zealand and allow passengers to see experience the natural beauty of New Zealand with their very own eyes. Here are some of our favourite sights to keep in mind when planning a Middle Earth style adventure!

Marvel at the real Hobbiton

 Hobbiton

Jaws dropped when Peter Jackson managed to bring the charming town of Hobbiton to life. While there were some special effects involved filming took place in Matamata, a country town located in Waikato. Isn’t it adorable? Today you can visit Bag End, stroll around the rolling hills or sit down for a drink in the Green Dragon Inn.

Explore The Trollshaws

Trollshaws

With its jagged rocky outcrops, towering cliffs and ancient forest PioPio was the perfect place to recreate The Trollshaws. Head off on a scenic film location tour or explore the intriguing region independently. Just don’t get lost!

Be captivated by The Lonely Mountain

Majestic and imposing, Mount Cook (see feature top image) was the clear-cut choice for recreating the splendour of The Lonely Mountain. It’s snowy peaks, indigo lakes, dense forests and misty air will make you’re on your very own Tolkien adventure!

Be blown away by beautiful Lake Town

Featured in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,’ Lake Town was filmed at New Zealand’s gorgeous glacial waterbody, Lake Pukaki. Surrounded by colourful wildflowers and rolling fields makes it a lovely spot for a picnic.
