Princess Cruises recently announced that it is teaming up with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to take The Sound of Music out to sea – in celebration of the 50th anniversaries of both the cruise line and the musical.
I have to admit that I am a massive Julie Andrews fan, so I absolutely love this idea. Combining a Princess cruise, a 300-square-foot “Movies Under the Stars” screen AND The Sound of Music – someone bring me several bags of popcorn!
The partnership will begin this month and the movie is to be screened aboard all 18 Princess ships. Sing-a-longs will take place in the onboard theatres, trivia games will test fans knowledge, and other movie-themed experiences are also lined up. Events will run throughout the year in honour of the classic film.
The Sound of Music really is a true classic in every sense of the word. A phenomenon upon its debut in 1965, the movie won five Academy Awards®, including “Best Picture” and still to this day continues to inspire audiences around the world with unforgettable songs including “Do-Re-Mi”, “My Favourite Things”, “Climb Every Mountain”, and “The Sound of Music”.
Just in case you need a refresher, or you have never even seen the movie, it is based on the book ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers’ by Maria von Trapp, and is about a young woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the seven children of a naval officer widower. The Sound of Music was filmed on location in Salzburg, Austria; the state of Bavaria in Germany; and at the 20th Century Fox studios in California, United States.
Princess Cruises show some pretty good movies aboard, but for me personally, this tips the scales. There’s something about a Julie Andrews movie that can make even the dullest of days shine bright as though being kissed by glistening sunshine. If I were onboard for one of these screenings then trust me, the entire ships company and passengers would need a supply of earplugs, because I would be singing my heart out! Well, It would be criminal not to.
