Melbourne

Australia’s cities are famed for their contemporary style and impressive diversity. Melbourne is no different, with its fantastic foodie scene, beautiful scenery, and wealth of local art and culture. Hire a bicycle and cycle around the stunning bay, drinking in the contrast between stylish architecture and the glistening water. Seek out one of the city’s famed eateries, whether it be the world-famous Attica or the graffiti-covered MoVida. If you’re searching for somewhere to watch the sunset, all you have to do is look up. Melbourne basically invented the rooftop bar scene, and creative cocktails and stunning views can be found on top of buildings all over the city.

Burnie

Burnie is a beautiful port city on Tasmania’s West Coast, which has successfully taken a creative approach to recovering from its declining industry. Since the closure of its paper pulp mill, the last remnant of Burnie’s long history as an industrial centre, the city has become known for championing local artisans. Take a trip to the Makers’ Workshop, which showcases the history, and burgeoning arts and crafts scene of this fascinating city. Expect to find everything from papermaking, to cheese making, to sculpting in its diverse craft studio. The city’s architecture has a wonderful Art Deco flavour, with the beachside and downtown area ideal for exploring on foot and marvelling at the beautiful buildings. Be sure to sample Burnie’s local cheese and whisky, some of the world’s best is made in this eclectic city.

Wellington

New Zealand’s capital is barely 1.5 miles across at its centre, so head out on foot to explore this cool, quirky city. A stroll along the harbour is always well rewarded, as much by the stunning views as the cool public artwork that can be found. The national museum, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, is also an essential visit whilst you’re in Wellington. Be sure to set aside more than an hour if you want to discover everything it has to offer, including an earthquake simulator, pygmy blue whale skeleton and the largest colossal squid captured to date.

Napier

Following a catastrophic earthquake in 1931, the whole of Napier was rebuilt in two years, resulting in a city which is a pristine time capsule of Art Deco architecture. For a comprehensive overview, book a place on one of the guided city tours that run twice a day. Like much of the region, Napier is a foodie paradise and sampling the local delicacies is a must. The New Zealand Wine Centre is a great introduction to the delights of the area, with an amazing bike tour of the vineyards followed by a delicious four-course lunch with premium wine pairings. Several parks and gardens are dotted around the city, which has a wonderfully laid back feel compared to some of the region’s busier cities.
