Eight Incredible Niche Cruises

Many of the world’s best loved cruise ships have facilities and amenities to entertain and enthral people of all ages, tastes and interests. However, some cruise itineraries are incredibly specific – here we explore some of the most popular and most bizarre specialist cruises which have taken to the open seas.

Star Trek Cruise

Trekkies are arguably the world’s most fervent fan community with dedicated conventions and events held in almost every country. It is unsurprising that the community has held a number of dedicated Star Trek cruises. The most recent of the cruises from Cruise Trek was the British Isles Intrigue aboard the Celebrity Infinity. Actors and production staff from the television shows have appeared on these cruises, held regularly since 1991 – making it one of the original niche cruises.

The Simple Man Cruise

The Lynyrd Skynyrd-centric cruise is a floating music festival aboard the Norwegian Pearly headlined by Alabama’s favourite sons with performances by a selection of other rock bands including Blackberry Smoke, Foghat and Starship this year. This year’s Simple Man Cruise is the 8th and final cruise headlined by the famous rockers.

Poker Cruise

Currently at sea at the time of writing, the World Poker Tour Cruise aboard the Allure of the Seas pits top poker players against each in a battle of wits for big cash prizes. The cruise around the Caribbean provides passengers plenty of chances to cool off when the atmosphere and pressure of big money poker grows too intense.

Caribbean Marathon Cruises

Whilst many people use cruise holidays as an opportunity to sit back, relax and do nothing; the Independence of the Seas has played host to the Caribbean Running Cruise, transporting passengers through the beautiful islands of the Caribbean for a selection of organised runs. Passengers can choose their own pace or even how far they run, but the organised paths give them the chance to complete a full 26 miles before the trip is over.

Antiques Boatshow

Whilst the UK’s Antiques Roadshow traditionally settled in country manors or castles to appraise antiques; our American cousin’s version took to the seas aboard the Norwegian Majesty to separate the valuables from the duds. The Dr Lori Vacation Cruise offered passengers the chance to get antiques appraise and listen to seminars.

Weezer Cruise

Weezer have never been a band to do things the normal way. Emerging as a poppy antidote to grunge music in the early 90s, the band then disappeared for the best part of 6 years as singer Rivers Cuomo went to Harvard. Now dedicated to just having fun, the band started the Weezer Cruise which was held on the Carnival Fascination this year. Featuring performances by Weezer alongside other famous names in rock music including Ash and The Cribs, the cruise is often just one big party.

Nudist Cruise

The Bare Necessities Cruise aboard the Celebrity Constellation gives brave passengers complete freedom to strip off and feel the sea air against their skin. The cruise itinerary takes in the French Islands of the Caribbean in February next year. The holidays have been operating for over 20 years, continuing to grow in popularity year after year.

Elvis Cruise

Although the King himself can’t make an appearance, fans are invited to celebrate what would have been the year of his 80th birthday aboard the Fred. Olsen Braemar. The Elvis Party Cruise features tributes acts playing all of Elvis’ hits as well as screenings of Elvis films and Elvis themed parties.
