Cruise and Maritime voyages Magellan was in Port of Tyne a few days ago and of course, I had to go and see her, again!
I first visited Magellan last year and although I’ve not yet had the pleasure of sailing on her, I do like her, very much! I was invited onboard for lunch and I jumped at the chance.
Her cabins are what you would expect from a ship approaching her 30th birthday, but I was pleasantly surprised by the size of them. The outside cabins were more or less the same size as the inside and there wasn’t much, if any size variation per deck. The suites are a step up and I instantly liked them. You have all the luxury comforts in all cabins, but the suite guests are also showered with champagne, fresh fruit and canapes.
If the sun had been shining, then I imagine there would have been quite a few people relaxing on Deck 10, but as it was quite miserable and raining, it offered a rare chance to see the space sun lounger free – Oh, those lovely wooden decks! Deck 10 mid-ships also offers a poolside grill. Next, it was on to Raffles Bistro, Magellan’s buffet option which is directly behind the pool. It is a good size with a nice layout and plenty of space between stations! Raffles is right at the aft of the ship and also offers an al-fresco option – weather permitting – on the Lido Deck, which houses 2 Jacuzzi’s and a small splash pool.
Continuing on with my tour, I popped my head through just about every doorway that I came across. The spa is well-equipped, as is the gym – just the right size for what her guests would require. Hampton’s Lounge is big and bright, and perfectly located: right outside the Kensington Restaurant. Perfect for pre and post-dinner cocktails! I have to say that I absolutely love the Kensington Restaurant. The décor is a mix of dark wood and bright green carpet/ upholstery and it works beautifully! This was my favourite area on my first visit and it still remains in poll position, although I have to admit that I do really like Sinatra’s bar!
Sinatra’s bar, Scott’s Nightclub, Captain’s Lounge and the Waldorf Restaurant were my next haunts. The Waldorf is very similar in layout to the Kensington, but not as impressive with its colour scheme, and Scott’s Nightclub feels like it goes on forever! Sinatra’s bar oozes Rat Pack and vintage Hollywood glamour and I love it. You would definitely catch me in there for a pre-dinner drink, and maybe one for the road, too. There are a few TV screens in Sinatra’s – great for watching a movie if the ship is quiet or you decide to stay onboard for the day.
One thing about Magellan that is instantly noticeable is the feeling of space! Not one single area feels cramped, even the cabin decks are super wide in comparison to a LOT of ships out there today – You can easily walk side-by-side from one end to the other and still have room to spare.
I left feeling like it really is time that I cruised on this lovely lady – maybe 2017 will be the year!
