Carnival Corporation Introduce New Game-Changing Wearable Devices

Carnival Corporation have unveiled their new state-of-the-art Ocean Medallion, a wearable device, set to be launched on the Regal Princess, that makes everyday life on board a cruise ship as smooth as a calm ocean.

Using innovative Internet of Things sensor technology, it tracks your movements around the ship, collecting data that allows it to predict your next move. Heading back to your cabin? The door will be unlocked, the light on, and the thermostat set to your preferred temperature when you arrive. Other features help streamline services, such as Ocean Ready, which speeds up port embarkation and disembarkation processes, with the medallion allowing you to board the ship without needing to check in.

Additional costs are all taken care of with Medallion Pay, which allows you to browse and purchase retail merchandise, spa services and excursions without having to search for your wallet. Ocean Compass allows you to easily navigate the ship with intelligent GPS-style technology, meaning you’ll never get lost on your way to dinner again. Speaking of dinner, personalised dining helps you choose and order food more easily, and even track its whereabouts to see when it will arrive.

Whilst outstanding service has always been a key feature of Carnival cruising, Crew Compass allows for a more personalised interaction, keeping crew informed on your likes and dislikes. Chief Carnival Corporation innovation officer, John Padgett, says: “The Ocean Medallion creates an elevated level of service that’s made possible by technology but doesn’t feel like technology.”

The discreet device can be worn as a bracelet, key fob, or clip, or simply placed in a handbag or trouser pocket as each passenger prefers. To prevent the medallion from being invasive, the no-touch technology interacts with the ship’s 7,000 sensors without having to be physically touched to them, meaning that you don’t have to search for your fob to open doors or check in.

For passengers that are concerned about privacy, the fobs are completely encrypted, with all personal data being stored in a cloud location that cannot be accessed. Traditional methods of boarding and payment are also available, allowing passengers to leave their fobs in their rooms if they prefer to be off the grid for one evening – or the whole trip.

The first ship to receive this state-of-the-art tech is the Regal Princess from Carnival Corporation’s Princess Cruises brand. But expect to see members of the Carnival Cruise Line, Cunard Line, P&O Cruises and Holland America Line boast these wearable medallions before long.
