Frommer has released its long awaited list of the best cruise ships of 2011. They chose Royal Caribbean‘s Allure of the Seas as the newest and most groundbreaking ship of the year, which was no surprise following travellers and expert’s reviews of the ship since its launch.

The judges of the contest poured praise all over the 5,400 passenger ship, particularly admiring the way in which the ship lets air and light into the centre via an amazingly clever new design. They also commented on the huge selection of entertainment options available onboard the Allure, for both kids and adults. With some amazing shows, and various fun things for kids to do during the day and at night, the ship is in a class of its own when it comes to entertainment.

Altogether the 2011 best cruise ships list contained 20 cruise liners consisting of both the old greats and the new, high-tech, modern ships. Making the list were:

– Celebrity’s Solstice Class ships – the Equinox, Eclipse and Solstice.

– Silversea’s Silver Spirit, Silver Whisper and Silver Shadow

– Seabourn’s Odyssey Class – Seabourn Odyssey and Sojourn

– Norwegian Cruise Line’s Jewel Class – including the Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Gem and Norwegian Jade

– Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria

– Celebrity’s Millennium Class – including the Millennium, Constellation, Infinity and Summit.

The co-author of Frommer’s Cruises and Ports of Calls, Matt Hannafin said “For us, picking the winners is both fun and horrible. On the one hand, some ships clearly stand out above the rest and do super well in our points based ratings. One the other hands, there are some ships which we really love or have a lot of respect for but they might not make the cut because although wonderful in some ways, in some areas they don’t stand up to the competition.”
