Holland America Line hosted the popular group ‘Recycled Percussion’ on five of its Caribbean cruises.
The group performed onboard Holland America Line ships ms Nieuw Amsterdam and ms Westerdam. The four-piece group have quickly become a sensation in America after managing to win the highest place in the non-vocal category of the popular TV show, ‘America’s Got Talent’. Since their success, Recycled Percussion have performed the Tropicana in Las Vegas and the MGM Grand and now with Holland America Line.
Recycled Percussion’s music is exciting and also has a sense of humour. Their style of music is known as ‘junk rock’ and involves the members of the group playing complex rhythmical patterns on different household objects, such as Hoovers, power drills, trashcans and washing machines. Anything that can make a sound when hit with a stick has the potential to become an instrument! The group play a range of styles from rock n’ roll to easily recognisable hits from today’s charts. Their show is also visually spectacular and includes drum kits hung upside down above the stage. Indeed, in order to accommodate this impressive group, Holland American created a ‘Great Wall of Percussion’, which was a 3000-pound percussion set suspended from the ceiling. This comprised of various kinds of cans and old buckets. The band members then strapped themselves into their seats at this Great Wall of suspended instruments and blasted out beats while rotating in the air. However, the group sometimes leave the drums altogether and one of the members uses his own body as an instrument, in so-called ‘body percussion’!
“Recycled Percussion currently is one of Las Vegas’ hottest acts, and we’re excited to bring them on board our ships…This exciting show has been a big hit with our guests and is a unique type of entertainment experience in the industry.”
— Richard Meadows, executive vice president, marketing,
sales and guest programs for Holland America Line.
The Recycled Percussion shows also aims to be highly interactive. All audience members are given a drumstick and a different instrument when they enter the show lounge. This allows them to join in with the percussive beats which are being created onstage. With this interactive edge and the high-energy performances of their shows, it is easy to see why Recycled Percussion has become so popular and a perfect choice to play onboard Holland America cruises.
