How to Stay Sun Smart on Your Summer Cruise

0

The summer cruise season is fast approaching, which means across the country Brits will be gearing up for lashings of sun and sand. We’re the first to admit that cruising is the perfect way to get a much needed dose of vitamin D, but we’re also well aware of the importance of staying safe. Skin cancer is one of the UK’s biggest killers, with at least 100,000 new cases diagnosed each year. So while we’d love you to score your fair share of sun this summer, we’re also calling on passengers to be sun smart.

Here’s how!

Cover up

The absolute best way to avoid getting sunburnt is to cover up when exposing your skin to harsh rays. When packing be sure to include lightweight cover ups, in breezy fabrics such as linen, silk and merino wool. Avoid cotton as you’ll likely overheat, and start to smell in the process! Colourful kaftans are fabulous for the ladies, while loose long sleeve white shirts give gents an utterly magnificent seaworthy look.

Siesta!

The hot midday sun is the perfect excuse to book a spa appointment, hit up the at-sea cinema or enjoy a nap in your air conditioned room. The harshest rays beat down from midday to around 3pm, so try and stay out of the sun as much as possible during this time.

Be wary of anti-malaria pills

Did you know that some anti-malaria pills can seriously hinder your skin’s ability to protect itself from sunlight? If you’re heading to a malaria high risk destination and are taking medication as a precaution, be sure to consult your doctor about the possible side effects.

Invest in good sunscreen

One of the major reasons people shun sunscreen is the dislike of the greasy aftereffect. This is where it pays to invest in a high quality product that you’ll love. Matte finish creams are a great option for the face, while light, non-greasy scented lotions are ideal for slathering all over your body, without that thick, zinc like feel.

Slap on some shades

As well as wreaking havoc on your skin, the sun can also be hugely damaging to your eyes. If anything, a summer cruise holiday is a great excuse to splash out on that pair of Ray Bans or Maui Jims you’ve had your eye on. As you’ll be looking at the water on a daily basis, polarised is highly recommended. Plus, it’ll make everything look like an Instagram show reel!
