Saga cruises have been advertising quite heavily in recent months, hoping to attract the type of holiday makers that “don’t do cruises”. It was assumed that the Saga fleet would be growing, with their new ship, the Saga Sapphire due to launch in March 2o12.
However, according to the cruise line’s website, the fleet looks set to grow only briefly before shrinking one again with the Saga Pearl II scheduled in for a farewell cruise on the 22nd April next year. The ship only recently underwent a £14 million refit (in 2010) but unfortunately, is set to retire already.
The Saga Pearl II ship was originally built in 1981, so it is a fair age. It offers Saga’s traditional style of cruising which they are famed for – including afternoon tea, cabaret entertainment and ballroom dancing. One stand out feature of the ship is the fact that a massive 25% of all cabins are aimed at solo travellers.
As of yet, we don’t know where the Saga Pearl II is headed to. Originally, before being acquired by Saga cruises, it was earmarked to go to Spirt of Adventure which is owned by the same company that owns Saga. However, there has been no announcment yet to say whether or not this will now be happening, although we are due to hear something within the next week or so.
