The cruise industry woke up to some pretty exciting news yesterday – construction has started on Royal Caribbean’s upcoming megaship, Spectrum of the Seas. As the ship enjoyed its steel cutting ceremony, the line revealed a few extra details about Spectrum of the Seas.
Firstly, the name has been confirmed – although it has been something of an open secret for a few months now. Rumours have been rife since June that Royal Caribbean were to name their upcoming ship, Spectrum of the Seas, after the line trademarked the name in the US.
The name was definitively confirmed as it was cut into the steel of the ship – providing a title to a ship which is set to arrive in 2019.
Along with the date of the ship entering service, we also know that it will initially be based in China with Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International confirming:
“Today is a very special day in the development of our new Quantum Ultra ship, Spectrum of the Seas. We are now one step closer to delighting our guests in Asia Pacific with this remarkable ship.”
Bayley also revealed that the ship will be designed to a completely new specification: “Spectrum will be another giant leap forward in vessel design and guest experiences that will provide travellers with ample opportunities to create unforgettable memories.”
As the first ship in the new Quantum Ultra Class, Spectrum of the Seas will have a capacity of 4,180 passengers – the same as its three sister ships – but is expected to boast a series of unique features.
The Quantum Class of ships are renowned for their next-generation technological features, so we’re expecting a few world-firsts from Spectrum of the Seas. Since the first Quantum ship, Quantum of the Seas, entered service in 2014, this class has proved incredibly popular with guests all around the world.
Following the Quantum Class innovations such as Bionic Bartenders and the iFly skydiving simulator, we’re excited to see what Royal Caribbean have planned next.
