Two top sports personalities, Michelle Kwan, world class figure skating champion and Greg Louganis, world champion diver have decided to participate in a head-to-head “Deck-athlon”, using the facilities on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. These two top athletes took part in various challenges which were transmitted over NBC stations during commercial time throughout the USA. The ten events included surfing the FlowRider, skating on the ice rink, climbing the rock wall, zip lining across the Broadwalk, mini golf, table tennis, diving at the Aqua Theatre, basketball in the Sports Zone, cupcake decorating at the Cupcake Cupboard and blackjack in Casino Royale!
Viewers to these challenges were then asked to visit the cruiseline’s Facebook page to vote for their favourite sports legend.
One vote per day is allowed until 12th August and each vote will give a chance to win prizes each day plus the grand prize of a seven night Caribbean cruise for two on the Oasis of the Seas or Allure of the Seas.
Winners will have the opportunity to have a go at surfing on the FlowRider themselves where over 60k gallons of water rushes by. Fixed grins are definitely the order of the day though, since any fabulous wipe-outs may well be the entertainment on the flat screen TV at the Wipe Out bar just alongside.
If sailing on the water isn’t exciting enough, how about flying above it? Bunge trampolines allow passengers to experience the total weightlessness of flying with the security of being attached to an oversized rubber band!
For those who are missing their greens and tees, the cruise can be a time to perfect your golf swing on the virtual golf simulator. With 9 hole mini golf to practice your putting people will think it’s a golf training camp holiday not a cruise you’ve been on.
In order to check out the full layout of the ship from the air, how about clipping yourself onto the zip wire that runs above the Boardwalk? The best view of the ship from 9 decks high.
If you get a bit warm reclining on the sun deck, why not pop down to Studio B to take advantage of the on-board ice ring? Ideal for any age and ability, just pick up your skates and give it a try.
There’s no reason to get cabin fever on Royal Caribbean ships as the jogging track gives you a full perimeter tour and the chance for an amble, run, walk or jog.
For more vertical challenges, the on-board rock wall offers you the chance to climb around 200ft above sea level.
Whether you’re an amateur athlete or a world champion like Greg Louganis and Michelle Kwan, there’s something for everyone onboard our ships,” said Lisa Bauer, Senior Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, Royal Caribbean International. “Each day onboard a Royal Caribbean ship is a chance to take on a new challenge, and every moment on our fleet is an event you won’t find anywhere else at sea.”
