23 Million Cruise Passengers Expected in 2015

Royal Caribbean’s president has revealed the number of cruise passengers in 2015 is expected to soar past the 23 million mark. This represents massive increase in passenger numbers – growing from 17.8 million in 2009. The percentage of satisfied cruisers has also remained high, with a high percentage of return holidaymakers.

The growth in cruise passengers is supported by an increased number of ports as well as ocean-faring and river cruise ships. Itineraries around the world have benefitted from 1,000 new ports and 22 new ships.

Almost two thirds of 2015’s cruise passengers are repeat customers and 89% of all cruisers in 2014 reported they were highly satisfied with their cruise holiday.

Adam M. Goldstein, president and COO or Royal Caribbean Cruises went on to explain that whilst larger and larger ships are being launched, much of the focus in 2015 is on ship design and comprehensive on-board services – increasing the demographics to which cruise holidays appeal.

Niche cruises such as river sailings are experiencing a huge surge in popularity – with a 25% growth from 2009 to this year.

The Caribbean has remained the most popular cruise destination throughout the industry growth with more than a third of cruise ship capacity sailing to this region. The stunning beaches, azure waters and tropical climates have ensured the Caribbean remains enduringly popular amidst the increase in cruise choice and destination options.

Other growing cruise destinations include the Mediterranean which accounts for 20% of cruise capacity, and Asia and Australia (both 6%).

With two new ships from Royal Caribbean set for launch in 2016, the Ovation of the Seas and the newly-named Harmony of the Seas, next year could experience even more cruise industry growth.
