Sun Princess in DryDock for Dramatic Transformation

Princess Cruises’ ship will undergo a two-week makeover costing over $30 million

The vessel will be refurbished and enhanced, receiving a sparkling new Atrium with Princess’ signature International Cafe, a new sushi and seafood venue, an updated Horizon Court buffet and a refreshed Lotus Spa.

The drydock transformation began on August 9th and will last until August 20th. Those interested can follow along with regular photo updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses online at The Drydock Journal.

The Online Drydock Journal will give a rare glimpse into the work required to transform a ship. You’ll be able to see behind the scenes pictures as the ship receives new interior fittings, furnishings and finishes.  (Above, right we show day 2 of the renovations – the construction crew have begun to remove pieces of The Terrace Grill, ready for the installation of a new self-service BBQ.)

As part of the drydock transformation, the cruise ship will also receive some new, contemporary Asian-style flourishes.

Speaking of the changes, Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president commented:

“Sun Princess debuted our first Japan-based cruise program earlier this year, and now the vessel will benefit from its time there with some new Asia-inspired elements as well as signature Princess features.

“We know from past projects that there is a great deal of interest in a drydock such as this, so we’re again inviting the public to follow along as the ship is transformed.”

When the ship emerges from the drydock transformation, she will feature Princess’ signature International Cafe with newly expanded seating and fresh decor. Guests boarding the ship will be able to eat sushi and seafood in the all new “Kai Sushi” dining venue.

The Horizon Court will feature contemporary food service areas and action stations for a la carte cooking. There’ll also be a new pastry shop and an all new coffee bar to enjoy.

The Sterling Steakhouse will also make its debut onboard Sun Princess, a sophisticated space offering cooked-to-order aged beef, along with other steakhouse favourites. YUM!

The ship’s top deck hamburger grill will be renovated, providing space for a new al fresco barbecue venue.

Finally, The Lotus Spa will receive a thorough makeover, guests can look forward to all-new fresh decor.

The ship is currently receiving its transformation at the Sembawang shipyard in Singapore.

About Sun Princess:

Once out of drydock, Sun Princess will sail a season of Asia and Australia cruises, before she embarks upon a second season of Japan-based cruising in April 2014.

Sun Princess’ new features will add to the ship’s current impressive array of dining and entertainment options.  The wonderful new venues will complement the signature Princess innovations already onboard, including the popular Movies Under the Stars poolside theatre and The Sanctuary, an exclusive top-deck retreat.

The 77,000 ton ship Sun Princess carries over 2,000 passengers and features a high number of staterooms with private balconies.  Onboard, along with the features noted above, guests can enjoy a pizzeria, boutiques and an internet cafe, along with other amenities.
