No doubt about it, Brexit has put a dent in the holiday plans of UK citizens across the nation. Rather than lump the plummeting exchange rate, this has inspired a host of holidaymakers to look a little closer to home.
Forget the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and South East Asia. Instead, why not make a beeline for the stunning Scottish coast? Home to breath-taking scenery, chic cities, a handful of UNESCO World Heritage sites and endlessly charming accents, Scotland is quickly emerging as a favourite with both British, and international cruisers.
To celebrate Bonnie Scotland in all its glory, we’ve put together a list of must visit ports, across the country.
Affectionately known as ‘Auld Reekie,’ Edinburgh is the jewel in Scotland’s crown. The towering Edinburgh Castle soars over the city, with cobblestone streets, underground haunts and the iconic Royal Mile strip on one side, and the upmarket boutiques, stylish cocktail bars and luxury hotels of New Town on the other. There are a handful of cruise ports across the city, including the lively hub of Leith.
For a real taste of urban Scotland, Glasgow serves up trendy live music venues, lofty Victorian architecture, world class shopping and a host of top-drawer galleries and museums. Cruise into the River Clyde and spend the day exploring what’s widely renowned as one of the UK’s most intriguing metropolises.
Carved by glaciers, Ullapool is a spectacularly situated port. The highland fishing village boasts more than 200 years of history, and is a great hub for exploring nearby attractions like Loch Ness, Castle Urquhart, Gruinard Bay, Inverewe Botanical Gardens and the Falls of Measach.
In search of the Loch Ness monster? Keep an eye out for Nessie as you cruise into Invergordon, the undisputed gateway to Loch Ness. It’s a wonderful place to reconnoitre the “Great Glen” and get face to face with Scotland’s wildest side.
A hub for tourism in the Outer Hebrides, Stornoway port is made all the more spectacular by its Lews Castle backdrop. As the only settlement on the archipelago, it welcomes visitors with small town charm, and a fascinating history peppered with Gaels, Celts and Vikings.
With its Scandinavian heritage, Orkney is an eclectic mix of Nordic inspiration, and Scottish design. As the jumping point to more than 70 remote islands in the Orkney archipelago, it’s a Mecca for nature lovers, with endlessly amazing vistas and seascapes.
