Shore Excursion: Travel Guide to Beautiful Bruges

The capital of the Flemish region of Belgium, Bruges is located near the northern coast of the country and has been entertaining visitors for hundreds of years with its unique blend of culture, festivals and museums. The city became one of the world’s first recognised tourist destinations, proving popular with wealthy British and French tourists during the 19th century.

Getting There

The Anthem of the Seas takes in Bruges as a part of the Royal Experience Cruise. Guests aboard the cruise are treated to complimentary drinks and incredible service. The ship will be the most technologically-advanced at sea when it launches in early 2015, giving passengers the chance to enjoy the fastest internet at sea alongside a range of unique activities and amenities ranging from skydiving to bars with robotic bartenders.

When to Go

In between Easter and school summer holidays is a beautiful time to visit the old city as the days start to grow longer and the temperature becomes mild. The city is well-suited to romantic strolls and leisurely coffees in one of the endless small cafés. Bruges’ streets can get quite busy during school holidays, benefitting those who can visit when the kids are still in class.

What to See

The historic centre of Bruges has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 2000, delighting history buffs and architecture lovers for hundreds of years. The medieval architecture of the city is also worth a visit for tourists who want to explore the history of Bruges. The Church of Our Lady is perhaps the most notable of medieval building in the city, thanks in part to Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child sculpture in the transept – believe to be the only sculpture by the artist to leave Italy.

What to Eat

Although the city is almost equally famous for the luxurious chocolates, the true Bruges experience is not complete without a trip to an authentic waffle house. The Tearoom Carpe Diem is renowned for serving beautifully delicious, freshly-prepared Belgian waffles to adoring fans. The 300+ year old building provides a charming setting to enjoy an authentic pancake with friends and family.
