Royal Caribbean International has drummed up wild media frenzy over the past few weeks with the highly anticipated launch of Quantum of the Seas, the world’s first smartship. Onboard passengers enjoy a plethora of next generation technology, including the convenience of a specially engineered mobile application designed for use on smartphones, handheld devices and various iQ stations scattered around the vessel. While the Royal iQ app has only been live for a matter of weeks Royal Caribbean has already announced plans to upgrade its functionality and enhance the overall user experience.
While the upgrades are an exciting development Royal iQ’s current functionality is nothing to sniff at. At present passengers can use the platform to view current plans on a customised calendar, make reservations at their favourite onboard restaurants, text or call fellow guests and make calls to on-land numbers using a pre-set per-minute rate.
According to Royal iQ app developers one of the major functions they have their sights set on incorporating is the ability for passengers to view their individual Cruise Compass in the palm of their hands. This will give them the freedom and flexibility to add or remove activities from their personal calendar as they please. Plans are also underway to add more onboard booking services to Royal iQ’s already impressive selection. This would allow passengers to use mobile devices to book everything from spa treatments to all-inclusive beverage packages. As well as upgrading the Royal iQ application itself developers will also be rolling out an Android compatible version. At present, the app is only available on iOS devices, which makes this an exciting announcement for non-Apple users.
While Quantum of the Seas was five years in the making Royal Caribbean passengers won’t have to wait long to start reaping the benefits of the updated Royal iQ app. The line is hoping to achieve a US spring 2015 launch which would see Quantum passengers enjoying the all-new upgrades in a matter of months! The line has revealed that the Royal iQ app will be available on Quantum’s fellow fleet members Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas when they launch in 2015 and 2016. Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s other flagship fleet members will also offer passengers access to the cutting edge platform in the New Year.
