Royal Caribbean Makes a Splash at the Tony Awards

Royal Caribbean performs Broadway songs at the Tony Awards

In their capacity as official partner of the 66th Annual Tony Awards, the team from Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas performed two numbers from the all-round favourite musical ‘Hairspray’ during last week’s ceremony.

The performance helped to promote Royal Caribbean’s commitment to the arts and theatre on board their cruise liners; the 4 minute segment of live performance from the middle of the Caribbean made a splash as it was broadcasted in a segment during the middle of the award show.

The crowd were somewhat bemused as Harvey Fierstein walked on stage dressed in a tuxedo, blue swimming ring round his waist and a cocktail in hand.  But bemusement changed to amazement as the screen switched to the cruise ship and the sailing troupe performing the two numbers.

Speaking in advance of the award ceremony, the President & CEO of Royal Caribbean International, Adam Goldstein, said:

“We couldn’t be more excited to partner with the Tony Awards to give the audience a taste of our genuine Broadway productions, which include Saturday Night Fever, as well as the Tony award-winning musicals Hairspray and Chicago: The Musical.  These amazing performances, along with a host of other entertainment options including our unparalleled DreamWorks Experience, our dive and aqua shows plus ice skating performances, afford our guests an unparalleled vacation that is second to none.”

The opportunity was used to show the targeted audience at the Tony Awards the quality of the productions on offer, and Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Lyan Sierra-Caro said of the performance:

“We were very excited to bring our world-class entertainment to the millions of viewers watching last night’s Tony Awards.  We also are thrilled to have partnered with the Broadway League to showcase the Broadway shows we offer onboard our ships.”
