Norwegian Cruise Line will also be the Rockettes’ “Official Cruise Line”
Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that New York-based dance company “The Rockettes” are to be the Norwegian Breakaway’s cruise ship’s ‘godmothers’.
For those who aren’t in the know, The Rockettes are a famous part of New York history: they’re a precision dance company who perform a dance routine that has been seen by millions over the last 77 – YES you heard me correctly, 77 years! The girls perform five shows a day, seven days a week, plus they have performed at the likes of the Super Bowl with the US president watching. The girls are famous outside of New York too, with the touring company visiting many American and Canadian cities.
The troupe’s new role means they’ll christen the ship, plus they’ll host a range of activities onboard Breakaway during upcoming sailings.
Two of the act’s dancers will sail on the first six cruise itineraries and the first sailing of each month from there.
The Rockettes will also give special themed dances classes, as well as taking part in photo opportunities and greeting passengers when onboard.
At the same time, it was announced by The Rockette’s management company that the dancing ladies will be partnering with NCL as their ‘official cruise line.’
The act of celebrating and blessing a new ship spans back centuries, as long as vessels have been sailing on the water. History recalls wine and even sacrificial human blood used in the name of blessing the ship. Today however, new ship ceremonies are more likely to be glitzy superstar celebrity-stuffed bashes, complete with red carpets and lots of champagne.
Norwegian Breakaway is set to have strong ties to New York – not only has the company affiliated with one of the city’s best known iconic dance troupes, but they’ll also be making the city Breakaway’s home port from May 2013.
“I strongly believe that the Rockettes, one of the most beloved and recognizable New York icons, are the perfect choice to serve as the ship’s godmothers,”
— Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian’s CEO
After arriving in New York, Breakaway’s sailings will be sailing to Bermuda weekly until October 2013. After, she’s be sailing to the Bahamas, Florida and Southern Caribbean until April 2014.
