Norwegian Pioneers World’s First At-Sea Racetrack

Royal Caribbean may have made history with its surf simulators and indoor skydiving machines, but Norwegian Cruise Line isn’t letting itself be outdone. In an industry first, the line has revealed plans to build the world’s first at-sea racetrack, where passengers can breeze past the checkered flag to their heart’s content.

Making a debut appearance on Norwegian Joy, the racetrack will play a keynote role in helping the vessel earn status as the line’s “most innovative and luxurious ship ever”. Measuring in at one kilometre in length, the 3900 passenger giant will offer guests a host of thrilling activities, including the chance to quench a need for speed.

Norwegian shifts into top gear

With twists, turns and two levels of track, the go-kart trajectory sees drivers go head to head in a race to the finish line. And best of all, it’s an open air design which means that as they speed down the track, drivers can feel the wind, the salt and the sun! The winner’s even presented with a first place finish photo for well-deserved bragging rights.

The announcement confirms that for adrenalin seeking auto buffs, Norwegian Joy is the place to be. As well as the industry’s first seaborne go-kart track, the ship also features a bumper car pavilion, plus a Formula 1 inspired dynamic driving simulator. Even the tandem tube Double Aqua Loop free fall water slide is all about hitting top speed, with passengers slipping and sliding their way to the finish line.

Cruisers seek thrills and technology

Purpose built for the Chinese market, Norwegian Joy (aka Xi Yue Hao) marks a new era of excitement for the line. Scheduled to launch in 2017, the ship will be based in Shanghai and Beijing, catering to the well-heeled Chinese holidaymakers. Their tastes are reflected in the ship’s ultra-high tech amenities and entertainment options, including the Galaxy Pavilion. Located on Deck 16, the area is home to hovercraft bumper cars, interactive video walls and immersive virtual reality experiences. Not to mention lighting fast Wi-Fi across the ship.

While itineraries have not yet been finalised, Norwegian still offers an incredible line-up of sailings across its eco-friendly fleet of 12. From the postcard perfect islands of Hawaii to the ethereal landscapes of Scandinavia, there’s a cruise for every single, couple, family or group of friends.
