Norwegian Cruise Line has announced the Norwegian Edge project, which will include a $400m (£280m) upgrade of the fleet, portside amenities and food offerings. The ambitious project is intended to raise standards and quality throughout the line whilst improving the overall Norwegian cruise experience.
The project began in earnest in late 2015 with the huge refurb of the Norwegian Epic, wherein the ship received makeovers to a number of the on-board restaurants. The Norwegian Gem also received a number of upgrades, with the Bliss Lounge benefitting from a lick of paint.
Norwegian Sun and Pride of America will be the next vessels to receive their upgrades in spring, before Norwegian Dawn enters dry dock in summer. Throughout winter 2016, Norwegian Spirit, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Pearl will get their facelifts, before Norwegian Jade is upgraded in spring 2017.
The line is also looking to improve the overall standard of the on board dining experiences. Although the fleet’s restaurants are already renowned for producing exceptional fare, Norwegian are taking steps to ensure that every vessel’s kitchen team includes members who are certified by the American Culinary Federation.
Test menus have already been rolled out aboard the line’s new flagship, Norwegian Escape, to ascertain their guests’ reactions. These menus from the complimentary dining rooms are intended to be shared throughout the entire fleet.
The line is determined to ensure that their ships retain their unique personalities throughout the upgrades. Each of the upgrade plans is distinct for every ship, maintaining the wide and varied appeal of the fleet.
Alongside the ship upgrades, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay, will also receive a little love and attention. Although the island was given a facelift as recently as 2014, Norwegian is keen to ensure their prize destination stays ahead of the competition.
