There can be no better way to tour this fantastic region than on MSC Cruises’ wonderful cruise itinerary.
The first stop on the Emirates to the Rising Sun Cruise is Abu Dhabi, a glittering modern city emerging from the desert sand dunes of this island in the Persian Gulf. Less flashy than its rapidly developing neighbour, Dubai, the UEA’s capital city has retained its focus on the arts and preserving the heritage of the city as it has grown.
Although it has plenty of the long beaches, international restaurants, and gold souks that are synonymous with the Emirates, it is cultural highlights like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque that really catches the attention. The imposing marble building is the largest mosque in the UEA and was designed by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who hoped it would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with architecture and art.
Next on the cruise itinerary is the old walled city of Muscat, which nestles between imposing mountains in a bay on the coast of Oman. Framed by two 10th-century Portuguese forts, much of the city has been modernised so few of its oldest buildings remain. One that has survived is the stunning mansion that now houses the Bait al Zubair museum, possessing a breath-taking collection of intricate Omani crafts and beautiful traditional costumes.
Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, has all the trappings of an idyllic paradise, from the rolling blue ocean that sits between 21 and 34 degrees in temperature to the sweeping white sands and lush jungle. Visit Kata Noi beach to really appreciate the natural beauty of the island, whether you relax on the beach or climb up to the Kata viewpoint to enjoy a panorama of the bay. Phuket has vibrant markets selling all kinds of delicious local food to sample, a 45-metre-tall statue of Buddha to visit, and stunning scenery all around the island.
Malaysia’s islands are popular holiday destinations, due to the hot sun, white sands, green rainforests and bubbling waterfalls. The cruise stops first at Langkawi, known as the Jewel of Kedah due to its scenic greenery. Take a ride on the cable car to the top of the Machincang mountain and take in the 360-degree view of this stunning island that is bound to leave you breathless. In the evening, wander down to one of the bustling night markets, where you can find all kinds of tempting local foods, from fresh seafood to pancakes, all cooked to order.
Singapore is the first port of call on the Asian leg of the cruise, and the city-state is the perfect introduction for travellers. From peaceful botanical gardens to glittering five-star resorts like Marina Bay Sands, where visitors can gamble and even shop, Singapore gives you a taste of the diversity and excitement that Asia has to offer. Be sure to head down to the hawker food market if you get peckish, as the bustling market has the widest selection of delicious Asian food you’ll find. You’ll want to try everything!
Ho Chi Minh is a thrilling city, with a heady mix of exotic food, French colonial architecture, and a history of war. Visit the War Remnants Museum, which has a harrowing document of the brutality of the Vietnam war, as well as some retired military vehicles such as ‘Huey’ helicopters and an M48 Patton tank. Ho Chi Minh is famous for its pho soup, so eat your way around the city and discover your favourite vendor.
When you arrive in Hong Kong, the first thing you will notice is the teeming energy of the city. Spend your time discovering the amazing landmarks around the city, stopping only to try the amazing dim sum you can find around every corner. When you are bored of photographing the breath-taking sights and exploring the countless street markets, relax in one of the trendy bars and restaurants that are making a name for the city.
Experience the famous cherry blossom season with a two-night stay in Tokyo. Enjoy a tour of Mount Fuji, a trip to the Hakone Hot Springs, a cruise on the beautiful Lake Ashi, and a thrilling journey on the bullet train. All of this can be added to your package for just £349pp.
If you want to see a little more of the world, why not add an Incredible India tour for just £799pp? It includes an amazing Golden Triangle tour of Delhi, the Taj Mahal and Jaipur, as well as an immersive tour of the forts, palaces, temples and markets of India.
