Do Cruise Ships Have Gyms?

For those of you worried about what 14 nights aboard a luxury liner with access to fantastic restaurants and cocktails made by highly-skilled mixologists will do to your figure, fear not. The majority of the world’s best-loved cruise liners have brilliant gym facilities, helping you keep in shape, even after doubling up on Lobster Night!

Massive Gyms at Sea

Unsurprisingly the Freedom and Oasis Classes of ships from Royal Caribbean have five of the biggest gyms on the seas. The Freedom, Liberty and Independence of the Seas all play host to 9,700 square foot gym behemoths. Alongside the traditional gymnasium cardio, weights and circuit-training fixtures, the gyms also benefit from Spin Class studios, Pilates studios and even a full sized boxing ring.

The largest ships at sea, the Allure and Oasis of the Seas, have a few tricks up their sleeves too, providing passengers with access to 12 state-of-the-art Gravity Machines, a Kinesis Wall and 5 Expresso Bikes apiece. The ships also include jogging tracks on deck 5, complete with motivational poetry – One lap to go/ Or maybe three/ Tonight’s dessert/ Can be guilt-free.

Fitness Fun

P&O Ventura’s gym goes to great lengths to make sure your workout is never boring. The inclusion of Trixter bikes gives you the experience of biking through a range of fun locations. Each of the bikes include an immersive screen, making you believe you’re peddling through dirt tracks, scenic routes and a myriad of other bike trails. The bikes have even become a huge hit with Virgin boss Richard Branson.

The ship also plays host to an endless pool – a small-sized pool with a constant current working against you to provide an excellent and demanding workout.

Best for Seniors

It’s not all extreme exertion in the on-board gyms, with the Holland America line offering a fantastic range of gym classes and workouts for seniors. The mind-body-spirit classes can give you a complete workout including complimentary class in yoga, tai chi and aqua aerobics. As well as the Greenhouse Spa, the Holland America ships contain some of the best wrap-around promenades at sea for scenic walks.

Al Fresco Workouts

The Carnival Magic and Breeze both have great top-deck workout areas allowing you to tone up with the fresh sea air running through your hair. Both the ships contain the signature SportSquare feature, an outdoor recreation area wrapped by an eight mile jogging track. After warming up on the first outdoor weightlifting facilities at sea, passengers can enjoy a game of basketball, volleyball or football on the adjacent courts and pitches. The more adventurous of seafarers can take to the skies, traversing the rope course 150 feet above the sea.
