Cruise Miss Shares Tips to Keep Fit and Healthy on a Cruise

There are hundreds of articles on the internet that tell us how to stay fit and healthy during our cruise, but not all of us want to go on holiday and sweat it out, some of us just like to sit and do nothing as we cruise the world’s oceans, and I am one of those people!

I could tell you that I visit the gym every day during my cruise, but truthfully, myself and gym don’t get on very well and if I was going in that direction for anything, it would be because there’s a bar close by. I could also tell you that I enjoy running around deck 7 at 6am every morning, but honestly, I can’t think of anything worse!

With that said, I am going to share with you some tips on how to stay, well, I can’t really call it fit or healthy because then that really would be a lie, so let’s say that these are tips on how to stay partly mobile and a little less fed.

1: Let me tell you a secret, nowhere in the booking confirmation documents does it mention that you MUST eat 400 meals a day, it really is optional. I know, I was shocked too!

2: If you can’t be bothered to walk up the stairs, then at least try and walk down them. I attempted to walk up 10 decks on a cruise not so long ago and by the time I reached the top I thought I was going to have to find a phone and get help from the medical centre. I have decided that it is far safer to take the lift up and the stairs down.

3: When walking from the front of the ship to the back of the ship, try and do it on one of the cabin decks. The walk feels ten times longer than it does if you take the Lido Deck route, hence tricking the mind into thinking you have walked further.

4: Experiencing rough seas? Then get out of your cabin and get to work! This is the time when we non-fitness frumps can really do our exercise! The calf muscles (those are the ones on the back of your legs) can be pushed to the limit as you battle the ships pitching motion. Don’t go with it, try and fight it, you will feel the burn! OK everything in number 4 is a lie, but it sounds like we are actually doing a fitness session, right?!

5: Wake up feeling fresh and with the desire to join friends that do the deck laps? Then go for it! Pick a spot on the Promenade Deck that has a clear run from port to starboard and off you go. You can keep up with your friends, who are doing laps, by doing your “widths”. You even get a break in between as you wait for them to make their way back around. Bonus!

So, there you have it! I know they are pretty bad but it’s better than nothing!

On a more serious note, however, we do all need to exercise in one way or another. Whilst onboard, I prefer to do the absolute bare minimum of anything, including breathing, but it’s a different story once I get ashore. I enjoy swimming and the more walking the better! It’s all about balance, remember that people!
