Centenary Cruise for Titanic Relatives

It has been announced this week that in 2012 there will be a special cruise to mark 100 years since the Titanic sank in 1912. The Titanic was sailing on it’s maiden voyage to New York from Southampton, but tragically sank after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

Relatives of those who died will be attending the cruise, paying tribute to the 1,517 people who lost their lives when the Titanic sank.

The Balmoral cruise ship will be retracing the exact route that the Titanic took, heading across to New York from Southampton on the 8th of April 2012. There will be a ceremony onboard, marking the occasion and the exact time that the ship began to sink.

There has already been a massive amount of interest in the sailing, with passsengers from as far away as Australia booking a place onboard the cruise. During the cruise, passengers will be served dishes based on the food that was served during the Titanic’s maiden voyage back in 1912.

Among those attending the cruise is the author Arthur Cropley, whose great uncle Charles Herbert Lightoller was the most senior crew member aboard the Titanic to survive. Arthur Cropley will be giving lectures on board during the cruise, looking into the history of the great ship and going over the details of exactly what went wrong.

The Titanic disaster is one of the most famous disasters at sea to have occurred in the last century, made even more well known by the 1997 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Many fans of the film will no doubt be desperate to get their hands on a ticket for the cruise, tracing the route of the original ship and reliving the history.
