Celebrity Edge Floats Out

Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship notched up another milestone as it prepares to make its inaugural cruise later in the year, floating out of dry dock for the first time last week.

“The float out process marks a milestone in the building of Celebrity Edge,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises. “With exterior construction complete, the amazing STX France team will now turn their attention to bringing all of the meticulously designed venues and transformational staterooms and suites to life.”

For the uninitiated, a cruise ship’s float out ceremony is a momentous occasion, and a key juncture in the building of a new ship. The first time a vessel is touched by water, the ceremony is treated with the utmost seriousness both from a technical and traditional standpoint.

With the float out ceremony complete, Celebrity Edge will now be moved to a wet dock for its final phase of construction, and with several industry firsts onboard, it promises to be an exciting occasion for the line and both novice and veteran cruise fans alike. The first of Celebrity’s newest class of ships for 10 years, this revolutionary vessel will be furnished with an array of innovative new features.

Part of its accommodation, Edge’s much-feted Infinite Balconies are set to remodel the ship’s at-sea abodes, allowing the entire room to become your balcony at the push of a button, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor into one. Elsewhere, the Magic Carpet, perhaps Edge’s most unique feature, affords guest a whole new world, 13 storeys above sea level. This innovative, cantilevered platform transforming four levels of the ship into distinct, new venues that let guests dine, relax or go for a dip like never before.

At deck 16, the Magic Carpet transforms into ‘the ultimate specialty’ restaurant, while its placement at deck 2 assists with disembarkation at tender ports. Love to dine al fresco? On deck 5, this revolutionary platform plays host to open air eating. As if the Magic Carpet wasn’t making enough of a splash already, when it rises to deck 15, it turns the pool area into a place that’s tailor-made for happy hour and late-night parties.

Meanwhile, Celebrity Edge’s Rooftop Garden is a chic space filled with live, verdant greenery and tree sculptures, turning into an outdoor cinema in the evening, replete with delicious barbecued fare that’s sure to prove a smash hit on the seas.

Celebrity Edge will sail its inaugural cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on November 21, 2018. The ship will operate a series of Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, before repositioning to the Mediterranean for a further series of unbelievable itineraries. Mini cruises setting sail from Southampton are also in the pipeline for this game-changing ship.
