Celebrity Cruises have revealed this week plans to construct two new cruise ships by the year 2020. The two new ships will form a new class of ships from the company, slightly smaller than the Solstice Class ships but larger than the Millennium Class vessels.
The two new ships are part of ‘Project EDGE’ and have been designed to offer small ship itineraries with large ship amenities. The 2,900 passenger ships are to be constructed at STX France and will weigh 117,000 tons apiece.
Delivery for the first ship is anticipated for the Autumn of 2018 and the second for early 2020. The two new ships will be first ships launched by Celebrity Cruises since the Celebrity Reflection took to the seas in 2012.
Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, revealed on Thursday: “Our new class of ship will set the standard for premium world travel and deliver the next generation of modern luxury experiences that our guests know and love.”
No further details have been released about the ships’ projected itineraries, names or features with Celebrity Cruises keeping further information under wraps.
Celebrity Cruises currently have 11 vessels in the fleet, but the Celebrity Century (the oldest member of the fleet) is due to leave the company’s service in April 2015. Ctrip.com has acquired the ship, fuelling rumours it will become a member of the Chinese travel agent’s upcoming cruise venture with Royal Caribbean, SkySea Cruises.
