There are few finer culinary treats than a perfectly seared steak, accompanied by a splattering of béarnaise sauce or a handful of chunky chips. However, a lot of restaurants, diners and eateries get steaks woefully wrong – from buying low-quality meat to charring it to within an inch of its life. So, to save you some steak heartbreak, we have picked five of our favourite steakhouses on the open ocean.
Found aboard a selection of ships in the Celebrity Cruises fleet; Tuscan Grille offers the very best in traditional Italian steak dishes. Although pasta and pizza takes centre stage in most Italian eateries, the folk of the Ol’ Boot have long loved a good hunk of steak – with their armies of skilled chefs cooking it to perfection.
Order the Filetto di Manzo Rustico and you’ll be getting a perfectly prepared dish of the finest cut of beef: Filet Mignon. Naturally, as an Italian restaurant, the Tuscan Grille’s wine menu is full of beautiful reds which can be perfectly paired with a delightful steak.
Princess Cruises’ Crown Grill channels the spirit of the classic American steakhouse, with massive, cooked-to-order steaks accompanied with hearty sides. For a real taste of Midwestern United States, we’d definitely suggest the Kansas City Strip – a traditional 16 ounce sirloin still on the bone. The Loaded Baked Idaho Potato and a pitcher of beer perfectly complements this hunk of steak – but be sure to wear your trousers with the loosest waistband.
Unsurprisingly for the Cunard Queen Mary 2, the ship’s Princess Grill restaurant offers a sophisticated twist on the traditional steak fare. The steak offering from the restaurant is Châteaubriand, Larded Peas & Gratin Dauphinoise Potatoes – a beautiful melt-in-the-mouth main course.
That is of course if you can resist the temptation to try the exquisitely enticing Lobster Américaine Flambé with Cognac, Truffle, Wild Mushroom Risotto. The Princess Grill might just have to be more than a one-off treat during a cruise aboard the incredible QM2.
Perfect if you want to sample a few different steaks and other meats, the Brazilian-style churrasco, Samba Grill, offers service from traditional gaucho cowboys who tour the tables with 13 different meats and seafood dishes on skewers. This all-you-can-eat Royal Caribbean steakhouse provides a relaxed and informal affair for couples and families – offering a unique and exciting dining experience.
Found in the smaller, more intimate ships of the Regent Seven Seas fleet, Prime 7 is a beautifully sophisticated steak restaurant complete with contemporary décor, exquisite wines and hearty helpings of expertly-cooked steaks.
The 32 ounce Prime Porterhouse Steak is certainly the standout item on the menu – a huge, stunning cut of fine prime beef on the seas.
