Dynamic and ever changing, internet news is continually introducing the world to breaking stories and innovative thought pieces. However, when April 1st rolls around it’s hard to see the wood for the trees. Turns out, the cruise industry has a wicked sense of humour, and played a handful of pranks on unsuspecting cruise fans on April Fools’ Day.
Here are a few of the ingenious winners!
When British man James Hand entered Boaty McBoatface as a competition name for the Natural Environmental Research Council’s newest Antarctic survey ship, he had the world in stitches. The name went viral, and while the council wasn’t hugely impressed, Royal Caribbean loved Hand’s innovation. At 11.59pm on March 31 the line issued a press release stating that, “James Hand has forever altered the business of naming ships, and perhaps could make a career out of it.”
The line’s President and CEO Michael Bayley was cited, saying “The people of the United Kingdom know the name of a great ship when they see it. Like the rest of the world, we fell in love with the name Boaty McBoatface when we heard it, and we knew immediately that Royal Caribbean could use James Hand’s talent to name our next ship.”
Determined to fool not just once but twice, Royal Caribbean issued another release introducing its new line of futuristic space ships. It revealed that the debut craft would be called Orbiter of the Galaxies, a “space and cruise ship hybrid” featuring panoramic intergalactic views and Zero G friendly stage shows.
“We are always looking for new ways to deliver the extraordinary and what could be more spectacular than cruising through space – just imagine the holiday pictures,” said Stuart Leven, Managing Director of Royal Caribbean for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Described as a “world-first in ocean tourism,” Carnival unveiled plans to launch an immersive submarine that encapsulates the fun filled experience, under the sea. Serving up Yellow Submarine and Deep Blue Sea cocktails, an Octopus’ Garden theme night and a new waterslide called The Green Under, the concept was too good to be true!
You might not be able to cruise in space, sail with the ‘BoatyMcBoatface’ creator or explore under the sea, but you can browse a huge range of itineraries that offer just as many thrills at Cruise 1st.
